Effective November, we'll be reviving the Phantom Galleries program. We are soliciting artists for our November 8 return!
Here are our venues (and requirements), to date:
1414 Del Paso Blvd
- this is a small space and can accommodate three small artists. There are three small rooms off a small lobby (reoccurring theme is "small!") We plan to have a musician in the lobby. Artist can hang art directly on the walls, although we encourage artists to be thoughtful for future artists, when putting nails, etc., in the walls.
1438 Del Paso Blvd
- this is also a small space. There is a lobby and a conference room. The conference room has four lighted display window onto the street which will be available. Art must be displays on panels, easels, etc. Preference will be given to artists who can provide their own display equipment/furniture. We can accommodate 1-2 artists in this space
1511 Del Paso Blvd - Casa Bella Furniture
Casa Bella, a furniture store on The Boulevard, would like to host an artist with approximately 15-20 works to display. Preference will be given to an artist with work that can be displayed on easels or pedestals. We will have a band in the parking lot next to the Furniture Store.
The Fence at 1707 Del Paso Blvd
Marji Auto Repair has a wrought iron fence that borders Del Paso Boulevard and Gibson Street. We can hang work from the fence or along the fence line. (If the weather is rainy, they venue may not be utilized in November). This space would accommodate 2-3 artists. As long as art can be attached to the fence, no display furniture will be needed.
1901 A Del Paso Blvd - Artisan Complex
This is a narrow, deep space which can accommodate about six artists. Some display furniture will be available but preference will be give to artists with their own.
There are other venues on The Boulevard but they are arranging for their own shows (Capoeira, The Greens, Del Paso Antiques, Taber Furniture, Doiron Galleries, Enotria, Top Dawg, Frans, and Simple Cafe - that I am aware of.) We also expect activities at Woody's, Iceland, the Bowling Alley and The Stoney Inn.
Expectations of Artists:
1. You will sign and agree to our Artist Agreement (attached)
2. You will have your exhibit ready for viewing on Friday evening at 10 p.m.
3. You agree to stay with your exhibit from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, November 8. (or have someone with your exhibit in your absence)
4. Pay Phantom Galleries 10% commission on anything you sell between 5-11 p.m. on November 8
5. Your exhibit will be removed and your area clean by Sunday, 3 p.m.
6. You market your exhibit.
7. You provide us with 10 valid email addresses which we can market Phantom Galleries to.
What to do next?
If you are interested in being considered for the November 8 (or December 13th opening), please respond via email with this information.
1. Your name, phone number and email address.
2. A web site, if you have one
3. A brief description of your work and what would make it an attractive addition to our Phantom program.
4. Which month you are interested in: November, December, either or both.
5. Whether you have the necessary display furniture or equipment (panels, boards or easels) for your show. (not required but since we having yet acquired all we need, preference is given to those artists who have their own.)
6. Up to 5 photos of your work.
7. From the list of venues about, recommendations about the venues your work would be most appropriate for.
Upon your acceptance, you'll be asked to sign and return the attached artist agreement.
Thank you all so much for your interest! All the folks on Del Paso Boulevard are working hard to restore Phantom Galleries to its previous success! We ask for your patience as we get Phantom back on its feet!
Speaking of which ... let me invite you all to our "revival party" on November 2 at The Greens Hotel. We are calling it Phantom Full Circle, in conjunction with the 15th anniversary of Altares del Mundo exhibit across the street from The Greens. We'll have music, wine tasting, food and, in the Altares del Mundo tradition, a blessing of The Boulevard and its future.
Feel free to email me with questions or suggestions. (and sorry for the long email message!)

Del Paso was owned in
the 1880s by immensely wealthy San Francisco lawyer James Ben
Ali Haggin and his brother-in-law, Lloyd Tevis. It was here that
Haggin, a native Kentuckian, entered the business of breeding
thoroughbred race horses and Rancho Del Paso once was regarded
as the world's largest horse breeding farm. http://www.sacbee.com/static/archive/ourtown/history/placenames.html
Arcade School was officially organized in 1885. It served
the employees of Rancho del Paso, who had originally gone to
a school for jockeys at the Haggin Ranch.
From 1978 to 1983, David White was the

APPROVE DEL PASO BOULEVARD ARTWORK
: A year ago, the Commission approved
the Arts Plan for Del Paso Blvd., and from the 22 applicants,
4 were chosen. Councilperson Sheedy found some funds for an additional
piece, so 4 artists will do 5 sites.
The first is Larry
Meeks who is doing gateway projects, one with Sheedy funds
and one with APP funds, one piece at El Camino and Del Paso
Blvd. and the other piece at the freeway and Del Paso Blvd.
His pieces are in the art deco style, with stainless steel, 12'
high arches with raised letters and lighting that will make the
pieces very dramatic. The next piece up the Boulevard will be
Taylor Gutermute's 5 portals which will be located directly
in front of the Subway Truck Parts building. The tallest piece
is 13' tall, and the shortest is 7'. They are also in the art
deco style, of powder coated steel and painted with powder coating.
The panels depict the history of Del Paso Boulevard and the Del
Paso area. Pieces will be viewed mainly by light rail and drivers
coming onto Del Paso Boulevard. Panels will be lit, which may
keep people from climbing and sticking their hands in. The panels
were created with a lot of community input and outreach.Yoshio Taylor's
clock tower will be at the crossroads of Del Paso and Arden.
The bronze bust that is currently in that position will be relocated.
The clock tower is 28' tall, has bricks at the base in an art
deco design, with bas relief in the bricks reflecting the history
of Del Paso Blvd. Most of the tower is metal, with some bronze.
The 4-sided clock face will be lighted at night. Safety is a big
issue with the current design, so the artist will reconfigure
the brick base to be less accessible to climbers. SHRA will provide
funds for maintenance for a number of years. The clock is designed
to run for 2-3 days on its own in case of power loss.Numan Huseinbegovic
has designed 6 sculptures for the median along Del Paso Blvd.,
reflecting past, present and future, and the diversity of the
community. The pieces were all designed to be aesthetically pleasant,
with a sense of place, referring to Del Paso history, and in the
art deco style. There is a repeating theme to the 6 pieces, which
the Commissioners noticed.
There is a plan to include artist statements
on plaques on sidewalks or the sides of buildings, so pedestrians
won't have to cross into median areas to see the name of a piece
or what the artist was trying to convey. A walking tour was discussed,
a brochure, possibly historical markers.
